Have you ever heard the saying 'what you put in is what you get out?' Well the same goes the body and mind. The way we look and feel is determined by what we put into ourselves from a nutritional perspective as well as a spiritual and emotional one. Energy levels, mood, concentration and brain function are all affected by nutritional intake. These things are also significantly affected by how we feel emotionally.
How you feel on the inside is reflected in the mirror. If you're feeling unhealthy on the inside, then chances are your hair, skin, teeth and nails are telling that story too.
Inner health is the key to looking, feeling and functioning the way we would like to consistently in our lives. The reality is though that it is not always easy to achieve. When the pressures of modern life kick in the first thing that goes out the window are the promises we made to ourselves.
If you're like most New Zealanders then you understand how the responsibilities we have in life can often be counterproductive to achieving inner health. Most of us work, parent or study full time, some of us do all three making time one of the greatest limitations to maintaining regular activities that feed the body and mind. Even maintaining a healthy diet is challenging at times when it's often easier to give in to the temptation of fast food.
So what do you need to be putting in to get what you deserve from your body?
• Give your body what it needs - make sure you have the recommended daily intake of water (8 or more glasses) and the recommended 5 plus a day fruit and vegetables.
• Listen to your body - there will always be areas of our diet we fall short nutritionally; your body knows what it's missing. If your feeling tired all the time perhaps you need a high quality multi-vitamin and multi-mineral and if you're missing out on fruit in your diet try some vitamin C.
• Cut the Junk - cut down on your intake of caffeine, sugar and foods with high fat content. Energy drinks high in sugar, fast food and sweet fixes are all short term solutions that will have long term effects on your inner health.
• Take time out - achieving inner health requires more than just good nutrition; you need to ensure you have time for you. Whether it's social time, meditative time or time out to prioritise sometime in the week to focus on you.
• Exercise regularly - walking, running, swimming, hiking, team sports, yoga - do something that you enjoy, mix it up and make it competitive. Whatever it is that gets you motivated go for it. Exercise is great for the body and mind and will boost your energy levels if you do it regularly.
Achieving inner health is simply about taking the time to focus on you. If you do then you will find you have more energy to focus on the rest of your life too.
